If you disagree, call your Congresscritter to make it reciprocal and see if that changes anything.

Even if you're pardoned of your crime in the US, you may still be inadmissible to Canada.

Good to know before you go...as they say.

When I was 19, I got arrested (I guess) for driving drunk.

I say, "I guess" because I was young, and don't know the specifics of what happened. I was also SO incredibly drunk, that I don't remember much about the whole event. I'm not proud of it, nor that time in my life.

Is there any way for me to find out what my "record" is? I think the DUI was "expunged" from my record. Again, I was young, and my father helped me deal with much of the situation.

I think there is/was a mugshot taken. I'd like to see it. If it exists, do I have a right to see it? If so, any idea how I can get it? I think I called the police department that was involved a number of years ago, and was told that I couldn't see it, for some reason.

I am, frankly, curious to find out more about a part of my life that is--in many ways--a blur.

For the record, this occurred in 1989. So a long time ago.

UsDoug,
I would find and talk to a good criminal lawyer in the city where this occurred.
Good luck!

Sounds like a trip (or attempted trip) to Canada is coming up for you.

No.. US citizen. Ohio resident. His (second) DUI from five years ago was expunged from his record after completing court required classes, AA, etc... He's been clean ever since (nice guy). The first DUI (from 20 years ago) was also expunged. As far as Ohio's concerned, he's never had a DUI.

Records were computerized back in 1989. Did you ever have to appear in any court? I'd be very surprised if some record of your interaction with law enforcement isn't on file somewhere. If its important to you, I'd speak with a lawyer and have a professional search of records made.

Yeah, in the last couple of years Canada has gotten real picky about who they let into the country. (I suspect the current Administration has in some way pissed off the Canadian Government.) I was sent up on business last year and got stopped at the border for not having all the right papers. They turned me back. I had the papers fax'd to me and tried again. They same Customs agent asked for the papers but didn't know what he was looking at - I had to tell him where to look to find the information he said he needed. He finally let me in. Funny thing, a few years early I went up there for exactly the same reason for the Canadian Forces and didn't have any problems getting in. Getting back into the US was a different matter though. DUI convictions and drug arrests are now pretty much automatic reasons for denial to enter Canada nowdays. Back in my younger days the only thing they asked at either side of the border was are you a US or Canadian citizen.
