That's why I referred to them as scalpers. I'd prefer to buy from an Office Depot / Staples / Best Buy where I can do local pickup and return if needed and pay list price. Or directly from Amazon as the seller, not a third party seller.

I am tired tonight, but I'll try to make an AppleScript or Automator do to this.

We opted for the Brother MFC-L5850DW, that does all the "alls" for the AIO part of it, but it's B&W only in the printing department.
OTOH, I made sure to do a lot of homework before pulling the trigger to make sure of what it did, so that when it showed up on the doorstep, it was safe. We replaced a similar Bro AIO from 2007, that while it still had potential, it was beyond my fixing abilities which have seriously waned the last few decades. Sorry for your hassle; if that happened when the fixing abilities were intact, I'm pretty sure the solution would have included single malt scotch. Maybe something similar will still help you now.... ==

Ouch. I have also purchased things but missed the fine print (Darn old eyes). C'est la vie...
Separate scanner ?

gadje,
I find that slight tilting is common when it comes to scans as performed via an all-in-one's auto document feeder (ADF). Doesn't matter which brand. It's just the nature of the design of the machines and how the ADF pulls in the paper. The only way to ensure there is no tilt is to use the flatbed. Not a huge issue when scanning one side of a single page. Definite annoyance when scanning both sides of a single page or two or more sides of a multipage document. I don't find this to be an issue with vertically placed ADFs like the one on the Fujitsu iX1500 or ix1600. In that case, drop the docs on the scanner. Make sure they're not tilted and the combination of the pickup roller and gravity ensures there is no tilt at all. If there is tilt, it isn't due to the design of the machine. It's due to poor placement of the document on the part of the user. Robert

I lucked out in that the company bought me a Fujitsu ScanSnap (S1500M) a goodly number of years ago. It's an absolute champ, especially since they updated the software (there was a while when they seemed to EOL the software updates, and I was using a third-party app -- which still worked but wasn't as clean as the Fujitsu one).
Recently I got an Epson ET-5880 EcoTank AIO, which has duplex scanning, and figured I'd do away with the ScanSnap; the Epson does a good job but just isn't as quick and doesn't have the bits & bobs I've gotten used to with the ScanSnap. FWIW, there's scores of them on eBay. I had a used one a long, long time back; only downside was that the rollers were very worn and it had trouble with big stacks of paper. Was happy when I got the replacement. Just took a look at eBay, there's one with under 30 minutes left with the bid at $15. Seriously. No cable, software, or power cord. https://www.ebay.com/itm/295308764525?ha...SwObNjX~Y2&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAkDq4hmH55YJYUvI2ksRhPos%2BbmvzAP39rPwC8W3zhNo7z%2B7YqPn3QDTD4U8Ian3A5f1go0GUROItARpn9DAsTOaz1wWO74NZ00B0pBlOCjAJ7QZb0%2FA8i0yAgibHKlvAqTasNKIuwiNXR9nqY29x0OCXTWUnlceR4Ytonloq%2Bkea4A5blNs1UZnIvCgq1miHOw%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_KovayKYQ

Getting pdftk to install on Monterey was a bit of a challenge. The installer linked to on the official page does NOT work and is old for some reason. I jumped thru alot of hoops trying to get it to work with no luck. Then I found an updated installer that DID install and work correctly. I'll link to it below. Once installed the instructions gadje linked to worked like a charm. Very simple:
Scan all odd pages of book to odd.pdf Scan all even pages of book to even.pdf Reverse sort the even pages $ pdftk even.pdf cat 20-1 output even1.pdf (where 20-1 indicates page numbers) Combine two documents into one $ pdftk A=odd.pdf B=even1.pdf shuffle A B output collated.pdf https://www.pdflabs.com/tools/pdftk-the-...-setup.pkg

Dave,
Glad you found a solution. Although it's doing the job, it still seems crazy to me to buy a machine that doesn't have the feature(s) you want and rig a solution instead of returning it and buying a machine that has the correct features out of the box. I know I'd've returned it without hesitation. So many models out there that have the feature and for similar or less bucks than what you spent on the machine that doesn't have it. Robert |
