Gene's story was like a personal horror story.
He seemed like a good guy, but he ended up dependent on a woman he wasn't married to and her kids seemed to fear him getting in the way of their inheritance. They acted on this fear and pretty much ruined the end of his life. What a nightmare. I had a hard time engaging in those threads - I didn't see any solution and had no advice to offer. Part of me wanted to scold him for allowing himself to be so vulnerable, but what good would that do? I certainly wanted to address his woman, but being 62, I'm now seeing the beginning of what old age is like and I understand her fear better now.
I know my mother was like a child as she got older. Fear was never that far away and if she ever thought that me and my sister would abandon her for something she was doing, she would have stopped it at any cost.
I feel bad that I never offered Gene any help at all and then he was gone...
My feelings also, on one hand, I feared reading his posts to discover more horrible treatment, and on the other hand I couldn't stop searching and reading every post.
I, too, wanted to help, but I did not know how.
Dave

I also miss GeneL. We started chatting online when I bought a PM G5 at an Apple Store fire sale (remember those?). He pm’d me when he was feeling depressed and I tried to listen and give him feedback and discuss the problems my family experienced with depression.
He was a part of why this place felt special to me. It was more than the camaraderie. More than discussing tech problems or great deals we found. It was about connecting. When someone would reach out to you through a PM and let you know they cared.
I’m getting sappy but for so many years, this place and the one before this were special to me.

Pourin' one out for GeneL tonight.
I may be the only person in this thread who actually drank in person with the man -- although Pat and Harbourmaster fall into that group, too, and probably others I've forgotten about over the years.

I felt heartsick about what GeneL was going through but had no ideas at all what could be done. At first I thought he just needed to put his foot down, but as the details emerged it began to feel hopeless. It's sad that his quality of life deteriorated so badly at the end of his years, his health problems and then the addition of money problems must have been overwhelming.

I feel that way to, The Celebration Fairy, Birthday Fairy, etc., if an important part of the community.
