The Fusion Drive is NOT ONE module as I had been told. There are two separate drives……????? Do I have to remove the whole logic board to pull the platter drive out???


Didn't I make this clear in the other thread yesterday?

Fusion is a combination of SSD and HD.

Just replace both with a single LARGER SSD.

I AM following the iFxit instructions. And to remove both drives I have to pull the logic board out. I am wondering if I can keep the platter drive in there but disconnected so I dont have to pull the logic board out?

That video should show you how to get to the second drive.

But I would suggest to leave the second drive in, the hard drive and use it as additional storage.

That is how I have my mini set up; 1 TB SSD and 1 TB Spinner.

Yes, but the instructions I’m following from OWC and iFixit are different - the iFixit instructions say I have to remove the logic board to get both drives out. I thought the Fusion Drives would both come out without removing the logic board.....

There is no "Fusion Drive". Now a Physical drive.

It is a "concept" of fusing an SSD and a HD, Two Separate Physical Drives.

The problem being I dont know which of the drives are bad - the 1TB spinner and/or the 128GB SSD. So I was going to remove both and just put the 980GB SSD in where the 128GB SSD was

Forget about the whole Fusion thing, just replace the small SSD (128) with the larger SSD from Robert. Keep the HD in there, unless it is damaged.

Ah, OK. You can leave the1 TB HD in there but disconnected if you want to save some trouble.

I understand that. If both drives in my mini are bad, both have to be removed correct? And then once removed I can pop in the 980GB SSD Robert sent me?
