Let me get this straight. You live in Los Angeles, but you work in San Diego?

"The traffic in Los Angeles is legendary, abysmal, and sucks up huge quantities of residents' lives. "

Same is true of the other most populated cities in North America. You do realize L.A. is one of the largest, most populated regions in the U.S., yes? Try living in Boston, or New York, or even Seattle. Same thing.

I live in LA. I live near the beach, not far from LAX, and work in nearby Culver City. It takes me 12 minutes to get to work. I wish I had a LONGER drive to work, so I could enjoy my '06 Honda Civic Si. Having a car you like, and driving because you want to, not because you have to, can make a lot of difference.

Not living an hour's drive in freeway traffic (I haven't been on a freeway in a month, I prefer surface streets) from where you work can make a difference, too.

When you talk about "the reality of living in Los Angeles", who's "reality" are you talking about? What you apparently meant was "my individual experience in LA".

Your LA experience--an unfortunate one, granted--is much different than mine, and much different than a lot of Los Angeles residents. By your comments, it appears you've mistakenly compared our experience to yours, and assumed they're identical?

On the other hand, I hear they have some nice beach communities and a dynamic entertainment industry in Kansas. Scratch that--I mean, some good BBQ sauce. (I do love BBQ sauce)

Like the traffic of Kansas City is any better.

Did they ever get that interchange finished on 70/29 that they started in the early 70's? Was still going on there when I was in college in the early 80's, still there in the late 90's when I visited my family last

I have lived more than a few years in both NE KS (15) and L.A. (8).

I will trade the winters of Oz for earthquakes, fires, and traffic any day.

However, I would trade SoCal for almost anyplace else the very next day.

Hopefully I will be out of here by this time next year, or sooner if I buckle down and save.

KS was a great place to grow up as a kid, but it was a better place to leave after grade school.

But then again , I could be happy on a small island in the middle of the Pacific - only leaving once or twice to visit family/friends.

Just got in from a 2 hour skate after work. Venice Beach and Santa Monica were beautiful. Had a Carl's Jr. Double Pastrami burger on the way home. I love L.A.!

12 minutes to work, that's pretty good. Do you live in Playa Del Rey?

I lived 2-1/2 blocks from the beach in Hermosa Beach for 49 years. I'm liking it here in Colorado. It does take me 1/2 hour to get to work by the time I park & walk to the building in downtown Denver.

Greg, Los Angeles does not go all the way to San Diego. There is a big orange turd between us. I'm guessing that picture was taken in the OC, because us Angelinos aren't up and about at 11 am on Saturday.

LA is a strange place to me. I spent a week there in the summer of 04' for the SIGGRAPH convention. It was fun, got to check out the X Games 10 while I was there. It just seems so empty downtown near the convention and Staples center. Nobody seems to live there, it's all commerce, and when the shops close it's like a ghost town. But that was just a few days, so what do I know.
