Battery recall--so now I have a very fast Mac Plus

I'm not sure if you've read this thread or not but...

...dude, that conclusion, its _ALL_ you.

It is true, elmo, that you can carry the laptop around and just remove the battery when you aren't there to watch over it. It's not like the batteries are exploding without warning and showering people with shrapnel, or such. You are making a mountain out of a potentially-inflammable-molehill.

You are coming off as one of those center-of-the-universe-instant-gratification sort of people.

ALL me?

Here's what Apple says:

[quote Apple Computer Inc]Note: After removing the recalled battery from the iBook or PowerBook, consumers should plug in the AC adapter to power the computer until a replacement battery arrives.
So: are you willing to pick up the liability of my using the battery? If my house burns down, are you willing to pay for it? Because Apple sure isn't.

Or are you just throwing trash talk around because you don't like that I've brought this whole thing up and the facts show that Apple hasn't done a great job?

Poor, pitiful mattkime--his world revolves around Apple Computer, and he cannot bear to have Apple's flaws revealed to the world. He denies, and then he attacks the people who dare reveal the flaws.

You may attack the messenger all you want--that won't change the facts of the matter.

So tell us all, mattkime--do you work for Apple Legal? Are you now offering legal opinions on the use of Apple technology and products and Apple's liability therein?

Looks like the shoe is now on the other foot:

Just buy a NewerTech battery and get on with your life.

> Yeah, crap happens. But to have a laptop sitting on a desk, not able to be carried around, for 6 weeks....again, would you settle for your car being out of comission for 6 weeks?

Do you have any other power outlets in the house besides the one next to your desk?

It's fine to be pissed at Apple for their having faulty eqipment and being overwhelmed by the recall response. The problem is, you seem determined to bolster your agrieved position by claiming hardship that's just not that impressive.

SOLUTION:

1. Don't use the battery in your house. OR
2. Buy a new battery that's better than a stock battery and have two when the replacement arrives. OR
3. Buy a new battery that's better than a stock battery and eBay the other when it arrives. OR
4. Sell the 'Book (to someone who does most of his work in one place) and buy an Intel machine (a non-Apple Intel machine).

lets see....5.9 million batteries being recalled...9 failed batteries...lets say 10x that many could fail...the risk of a single battery failing - 1.5 x 10^-5

Now I'm not a betting man, but I'll make an exception when I'm 99.9998% likely to be right.

Elmo-

Seriously, buddy. You sound inappropriately anxious--a problem I'm familiar with.

This stuff made all the difference in the world--I'm about 30% more productive at work, getting raises and stuff, where I didn't before--huge, amazing freaking difference:

I take 100mg 2x/day. You can get it at a health food store. Try it--it might change your life, like it did for me.

I hardly took any sort of stance in defence of Apple. Learn to read and comprehend.
It could conceivably not be Sony's 'fault' either.
It could be some as simple as a protection diode off a new assembly line that's breaking down a lot sooner than it was designed to/should. Who knows.
There could be millions of them out there in things other than batteries.
Time will tell.

Does six weeks (or more) suck ?
Yes.
This same sort of failure often happens with automotive parts, too. Life expentancy stress tests are great, but out in the real world is different.

I see no benefit from taking every single opportunity to bash Apple (like you do and have)
just because you have to wait in line like every one else.

This thread is about nothing more than you having to be treated no more or less fairly than the average peon.
Admit it.

No, not at all. If anything, this thread is about the situation *Apple* has put its customers in.

I know damn well I'm not alone on this, but it appears I'm the only one here calling Apple on it. Like I said, this wouldn't happen with Lexus--because Lexus is much more critical about their suppliers and the parts they supply.

This situation that Apple has put its customers in has little to do with me, but quite a bit to do with everyone like me--owners of portable computers who are now stuck with desktop computers, because Apple failed to hold its suppliers to more stringent terms and/or failed to monitor what the suppliers were supplying.

If you think I stand alone on this, think again. Many others in the world are as aggravated as I am. It started with Apple's inability to make a simple web site to handle this (which, AFAIK, is still FUBAR). If they knew of a problem with the web site not recognizing serial numbers and it still wasn't fixed in 24 hours, then Apple has some serious problems.

They can't fix a web site to recognize numbers, and they can't give their AppleCare reps access to doing it by hand, and they can't get their retail stores involved. Gee, Apple, that's a lot of "can'ts".

I don't take every opportunity bash Apple. On the other hand, I don't hesitate to bash Apple when they deserve it. I also don't hesitate not to bash, say, Dell when they don't deserve it.

But that goes against the "sense of community" here, where by definition everything Apple does is worthy of nothing less than active praise (to do less is to bash, and we can't do THAT) and everything Dell does is worth of nothing less than active condemnation (to do less is to praise, and we can't have THAT).

If this is how you all define your lives, so be it. But Apple is nothing more than a multinational corporation responsible to its shareholders. They're not responsible to you or anyone else here on an individual basis. When they screw up, they deserve to be called on it.
