[quote Chupa Chupa]the CE market leader right now is BB, which grossly OVERPRICES almost everything they sell.
They do not 'grossly' overprice their electronics (TVs, iPods and the like). There are list and 'street' prices for that stuff, and just about everybody sells it for the same price. They DO overprice their accessories, however. In fact, their actual business model, and most of their profits are based on selling these ancillary items and the extended warranties and now Geek Squad services (which are a joke). The 'low prices' and rebates on big ticket electronics are just a ruse to get you in the store.

I haven't set foot in a CC or BB in years, and I've never set foot in a Walmart. And yes, I'd have to say the selection of CE at CC and BB are both pretty craptastic. I recall looking at home theater speakers on my last visit to BB: overpriced junk as far as the eye could see. I don't get to visit Fry's often enough to discern the quality or prices of their CE offerings.
The Good Guys fell down several levels of quality over the years, but they were still better than the big box guys until CompUSA shut 'em down. Now there are only a few smaller HiFi/Home Theater chains around here hanging on by the skin of their teeth, plus a few high-end boutique places where I can't even afford to walk in the door.
As usual, a lot of business in this sector is being driven online. The only A/V components I've bought in the past 7-8 years have been purchased online, and I imagine that trend will continue for me.

Oh, but they do grossly overprice stuff. One of the ways they do it is by selling major items that are slightly different in model number. They charge the same price as, say, CC, but they offer a version that has had features removed. Sometimes the model numbers are the same but the revision numbers are different. You'll buy a specific item by name and model number, not knowing it's not what you think it is.

I don't know what Best Buy stores are like anywhere else, But the prices at the three local ones near me are MSRP.
$199.00 iPod : "ON SALE" now for $199.00. That's not 'ON SALE', that's FOR SALE.
Extremely rare for anything in the Sunday Weekly Flier to actually exist in the store.
This store still wants to cavity search all customers exiting store.
"Sir, we reserve the right to check your bags".
"Arrest me."

I love this kind of warped logic. You haven't set foot in there for years, but you KNOW that their selection is "craptastic". It's consumer electronics. They've never professed to be high-end, or to specialize specifically in Home Theater.

Really? Maybe if it's something like a new Playstation or Wii. I've often gone in on a Tuesday or Wednesday and bought something from Sunday's flyer with no problems.

Enough bickering. Can we discuss Joy Division? I feel so dark and mysterious.

[quote ztirffritz]Proof that Walmart is evil. Not satisfied with wiping out local businesses, they've started to suck the life out of other evil greedy huge corporations now.

Dang, someone's got a Goth fixation going on!
And, technically, Joy Division were not a Goth band. Post-punk is a better descriptive fit. Just because Ian topped himself and a lot of goths listen to them...
