Memtest shows FAILURE page after page
#11
[quote roshi]the failures are when I ran MEMTEST. Soon in the process, it began zooming through page after page of

FAILURE: 0x784409230392702-2085-0 ! = 0xa589233875420 type stuff.

After several minutes, I just shut the machine down.

I am not familiar with memtest, never ran it before.
Roshi, a few tips.
1. Use Rember, which is a GUI for MemTest, makes it easier for the first timers.
2. Use logical steps.
First run Rember with stock RAM, then if it passes, put in the third-party RAM next.
3. Unplug everything from the USB bus but the mouse and keyboard before running tests.
Troubleshooting Takes Time.

Thanks, BigGuyRusty & others

I finally found the Apple Hardware Test - it is on the Mac OS X install disc that came with the G5. It reports:

2 MEM / 10 / 4 : DIMMO / J6700

**** ERROR CODE ***

That was with the short, 10-minute test.
Just downloaded Rember.

Rember's log shows:

Attempting memory lock... locked successfully
Creating test buffers...
Buffer A: 1860MB (1950490624 bytes) at local address 0x000000008ff4e000
Buffer B: 1860MB (1950490624 bytes) at local address 0x0000000104370000

Running 1 test sequence...

Test sequence 1 of 1:
Stuck Address : setting 1 of 16FAILURE: possible bad address line at offset 0x1971ac5a.
Skipping to next test...
Random Value :  FAILURE: 0xd7df8c045fb73a62 != 0xf7df8c045fb73a62 at offset 0x0ae9685a.
FAILURE: 0xef3d4da2fcf1e8bb != 0xff3d4da2fcf1e8bb at offset 0x0ae969b2.
FAILURE: 0x7defd4a3dffed477 != 0x2defd4a3dffed477 at offset 0x0ae96a02.

*** Address Test Failed *** One or more DIMM address lines are non-functional.
*** Memory Test Failed *** Please check transcript for details.

so it looks like the memory stick or slot that failed was the stock Apple 256 MB.

Hardware test says 2 MEM / 10 / 4 : DIMMO / J6700

**** ERROR CODE ***

when I look in About this mac, it shows that memory slot as being the stock ram.

So do I remove the STOCK ram instead of the 4 gigs of OWC Ram?

By the way, the computer works fine unless I work on movies.

Yes, then call Apple and have it replaced.

I bought applecare for the G5. But is it even worth it to have those dinky 256k sticks in there?

Hmmm., did you special order the 256K sticks?

Yes, get them replaced, you may need to test it again someday, or send it back.
You wanna send it in with your 4GB?

as I recall, the 256k sticks came stock. Did Apple really sell a G5 tower with 512k of memory? I think it was a November 2005 G5, dual 2.3.

It has been 11 years - maybe 12 or 13 - since I had to call Apple about anything.

Not KB, MB!
From your first post.:
"Size: 256 MB"

So it has been a long time since you called.
They miss you, call.

Called apple, they are sending a replacement 256mb stick. I did that just to keep it on hand.

Took both of the stock Apple-supplied 256mb sticks out, leaving me with only 4 GB of RAM, ran the extended hardware test, it reported no problems.
