Lux - it was YOU who wrote the ads, wasn't it???
AlphaDog, well he claims he has plenty of repeat business: "Can use sissers and clippors very gentle i groomed steve stukers dogs 5 time he is my naybhor."
Years back, when we just had the one doggie, we took her to Petsmart and I think it was around $35-40. It's probably more now. I think for Christmas, I'll splurge and insist that all 3 doggies go in for a proper grooming. Currently, I'm the groomer.

PetCo charges $45 to groom out 11 lbs terrier mutt. The mom and pop dog grooming service in our old neighborhood charged us only $25. Tho' he doesn't do teeth cleaning.

I wouldn't have thought there would be that much variation in different regions of the country. This area doesn't have a cost of living as high as that of So Cal, but it's not exactly known as a cheap place to live, either.
I used to do the grooming on our last dog, but I was younger, and he was passive resistive. He was also a very smart dog, and he would watch the activity level in the house. Even when I tried to be super sneaky, it didn't take him long to figure out that doggie shampoo and towels had gone into the bathroom. When it was time to get him, he'd be in one of the most inaccessible places in the house he could find, and he'd go totally limp. This was back when my son would help me, and even he had trouble getting a 100 pound dead weight up and moving. Isaac would eventually give in and walk to the gallows, but he made sure there was no mistaking how he felt about it.

AlphaDog - sounds like what we go through every time we try to give the dogs a bath.
The eldest, Puddles, always knows when it's bath time. We always take her by the collar and escort her into the "waiting room" (aka bedroom attached to the bathroom where the "bathtub of doom" resides). She weighs about 70 lbs, but she doesn't play the dead weight game; however, she always has the most sorrowful expression on her face. Once she's in the bath, she'll cooperate - but given the chance, she'll jump out (if not closely watched).
Shadow, the 100 lb German Shepherd, plays the dead weight game. What a chore it is to get HIM into the tub! Once he's in there, he tolerates it all ok.
The youngest, Misty, weighs 33 lbs and she fits under the bed! The only way to get her out from under the bed and into the tub is through extensive bribery. The first treat is given to her while she's comfortably UNDER the bed. The next is placed 6" from the bed (but within her line of sight). The final treat is held just out of her reach as she's partially out from under the bed. It's only relinquished to her when one of us has a firm grasp on her collar. Once she's in the bath, she acts like she's being tortured. The poor girl even tries to avoid the water by climbing into the tiny corner on the bathtub ledge opposite us. This is no easy feat for a 33 lb dog, but she manages! It doesn't help that once she's wet, she looks like a drowned rat!

Fortunately, since day one our mutt has always been good about grooming and bathing. He's just not good at staying in the car by himself.

Now Isaac could NOT be bought off! He wised up quickly to the treat enticements; he'd clamp his jaws shut and you couldn't even force a treat into his mouth. At least he was too big to fit under the bed.
Well, Kap, Louie just doesn't know what to think about a dog who doesn't like to go for a ride. There isn't anything in the world he likes better than being in the car, and he doesn't care if I'm in it or not!

AlphaDog, every dog has its weakness! Misty's is food! It's not easy to get her out but eventually, the 3 treat scenario does its trick.
My doggies are with Louie - they don't know what to think about a dog who doesn't like to go for a ride either! You cannot say the word "truck" in their presence. They know that word quite well! (no, we don't put them in the back of the truck - they go in the back seat of the truck).

Lou is to the point where I don't even have to say anything. If I look at all like I'm getting ready to go out (me wearing shoes is one clue!), and most especially if he hears keys come out of my purse, he's over by the hook where his car harness hangs, alternately looking at it and then me. He was totally confused last Sunday when I got out keys to move the car out of the garage so my son could get in the attic. I'm sure he's probably particularly in tune with my behavior since there are only the two of us here. Isaac loved to ride, too, but he always seemed to know the difference between the times there was a chance he could go for a ride and the days when it was time for my husband or me to head off to work. He'd just trudge on out the door on work days. There was a little glaring, but not too much. Have I said I love dogs?
