Yup, I started in fall of '97. Had just bought my first mac, a PowerBook 520c. I remember getting my first brand new Mac the next spring... a PowerMac G3/266. Man, was that fast!

I first got online in '97 and discovered this place soon after. Oldest post of mine over there is 5/1/99. My main haunts back then were the DealMac forums, the Apple forums, MacCentral and Tom Koons' 6400 Zone website. Apple's forums were great until they broke it down into a bazillion sub-categories. I still hit it when I have a problem I can't solve. The 6400 Zone is actually still going, but very few updates for obvious reasons. I still have my 6400 and actually fired it up a couple of weeks ago. Fond memories.

We moved back from the Netherlands in late 1998 and it wasn't long after that that I found the other forum. As soon as I found out about the migration I joined this one. Like some of the others I also visit the other one from time to time mainly to look for deals. I very rarely visit any of their forums.

Gareth wrote: If your computer has a modem port and your fax machine has a manual-receive button, you can connect them with an ordinary phone cord to send a fax using fax software, which mimics a printer. The trick is to configure the fax software to send without waiting for a dial tone, which you can either do in the fax pref's or by editing the commands in its connection-script. (Which method to use will depend upon the software.) It's also possible to put a device inline to simulate a dial tone if you can't get the fax software to "send" the fax without it. There are instructions online for making that kind of gadget with cheap parts from Radio Shack or you could download the tone and play it through your computer's headset jack with a little bit of clever wiring. Otherwise, you would need access to a second phone line to fax the "print" to yourself. I've faxed stuff to the front desk of hotels while I traveled in lieu of printing. Receiving faxes at hotels is usually free to guests.

Under my older handle KenS it was 07/25/00 07:43PM
I switched to Ken Sp. in 01 so when I searched for my posts KenS didn't get confused with KenSington RE: Maximum serial printer cable length? Posted by: KenS (IP Logged) Date: July 25, 2000 07:43PM Man---you guys know your stuff!! While your at it...what is the maximum length for cables that use RCA jacks. I am trying to install a remote camera, or camcorder, and I need about a 200' cable. Any alternate suggestions, or location of the specs I need, will gladly be accepted. Thanks

I found the DM forum in '97. I had just purchased my first computer, a 7300/180 with a dial-up modem and AOL (and a 17" Applevision 1710 monitor that cost $1000 and died after one year).
I've learned a lot from reading these posts. ![]() ![]() northern california coast
