Old-timers from the "old forum"
I was there before the great server crash & when it was a truly wonderful forum with a real sense of community. I lurked for a few weeks before a Power Mac 7100 gave me need to post a question.

I was so relieved to have found this place, with so many familiar names.

Cyberian was so awesome. Arguably the best thing about the dot-com madness days. $3 cables delivered overnight for free. Ah, those were the days...

I believe I was user #500 something on Dealmac back in 1996. IIRC, XLR8yourmac.com was just started by Mike. I recall reading about XLR8yourmac from dealmac and chatted with Mike via IRC (or was it via email)?

Too funny, I just visited the forum at dealmac---having not gone back since the Schism.

Apparently 2 people private msg'ed me in 2006 to ask questions. Ouch...didn't think people would have messages for me 3 yrs later.

It was 2003 for me. I lurked for about 6 months before posting.

I bought one for $38. It's in my 6400 which is still running btw. Upgraded the heck out of that thing, all with bargains found on dealmac. :-)

Did you add the TV/video capture card? G3 card in the L2 cache slot? A zip drive in the upper bay? Max that RAM out to a whopping 136 GB? I squeezed every ounce of life out of my 6400. I probably spent more on upgrades than the computer cost.

Things grew unsettled and the milk curdled for good after 9/11 and that was that.

As tragic as September 11 was, I was also saddened at what happened to dm and the way some posters responded. It was no small shock, and it was a moment of clarity, a curtain lifting letting one see beneath the facades that some maintained.

Today I tell myself that none of those aberrated (new word) personalities are here today, and wonder what became of some that apparently didn't chose to come. There were several, Charlie ™ chief among them.

Seems like a whole different millennium back then.

Huh? The forum was actually more cohesive after 9/11-- it was the run-up to the 2000 election that cast the forum out of Eden and into contentiousness.

Also, are you saying Charlie was someone who surprised/disappointed you with what was underneath the facade?

I stopped posting at post 10,000 - as a shrine to me!

I was banned and disemboweled over there (all posts gone) then Larry was the next day, because I was
PMing people to come over here.

Larry got reinstated quicker... he pays. Eventually they put it all back, but even though my password
gets sent to me, I can't post over there because I can't log in. I think that's funny - but Brian obviously
learned of my activities in IL and this forum eventually, so perhaps that is why it went even further.

G3 card in the L2 cache, a scsi drive in the upper bay, maxed out the ram and installed RAM Doubler, no TV/video capture card -- is it too late to do that? Big Grin

I remember the great migration of oh-five. It seems like it has been longer.
I started at the old forum as anothersteve and switched to wicked before the move.

First post in '99 but may have been earlier due to the "crash".
