FAT32 volumes would work. They are read/writable on both Windows PCs and Macs.
The CDs probably didn't work because he burnt them as sessions with the built-in burning software and never closed/finalized the discs. Most people don't know how to do that under Windows.
I've never moved Cubase files cross-platform before. I'd get extra copies of the files in OMFI, SDII or AIFF format just in case... and MIDI files if any of it's MIDI.
