I did some more reading and he also has frequent ventricular tachycardia which can cause sudden death. That's why he had an ICD (defibrillator) implanted. He has the worst kind of heart disease you can possibly have and still be upright, and if it weren't for the extraordinary measures doctors have taken because of his position, he'd be, best case, retired with disability, and worst case, dead.
Atrial fibrillation is bad enough--when you have something that affects the ventricles, which do the real business of pumping blood--you have real trouble. His vice-presidency was a real accomplishment for his cardiologists.
