"take Apple TV [#1] downstairs and see if you get distortions there. then you can pinpoint the problem more accurately."
I did this and appletv #1 still distorts even downstairs.
"Also try Apple TV [#1] upstairs on a Aux1 input."
I tried this and it still distorts.
I also swapped in appletv #3 upstairs and found distortion on the hdmi connection but no distortion on the normal audio out going to tape2. So today I think I will see about replacing the hdmi connection and also see about replacing the bad appletv.
If you have any more suggestions please let me know.
