I'm not sure what your budget is, but compared to other beach vacations, this one was tops for me.
The owners of the lodge are Eric and Wendy. They are the nicest people and extremely helpful. They helped to arrange travel, hotel, taxis buses, tours, you name it. It was tops in my book. This IS NOT a resort town. It is a poor community on the coast of Costa Rica, but it was safe, the people were friendly, the food was good, the beer was cold, the beaches were beautiful. We rented 2 bikes for the week and loved it.
The lodge has/had two large mastiff guard dogs named Ozzie and Elvis. They greeted guests and "patrolled" the grounds.
We flew into San Juan, took a bus to Puerto Viejo, then just crashed* for a bit.
Another alternative, would be the panhandle of Florida. Ft. Walton Beach.
*by 'crashed' I mean we relaxed. We sat on the deck in a hammock drinking beers, reading books, and just enjoying the Costa Rican lifestyle..Pura Vida.
