With law enforcement increasingly ignoring property crimes as "too much trouble" - expect this sort of thing to get more and more common....
Best you can hope for is to run into the thief in a dark alley some day when there are no witnesses, and you're holding a nice iron pipe.
It's only vigilantism if you don't give the Law the opportunity to exact justice. If they punt it back, and there's no question of guilt... well... The experience should be made memorable to the thief. And painful.
