Is there something that I am supposed to be doing in which the speed is even remotely an issue?
*Supposed* to be doing? Who knows.
But if you had a 1G 'Phone and moved up to a 3GS 'Phone, you'd know what the difference is.
Given the use I forsee the 'Pad getting compared to the 'Phone, yeah, it should be fast and smooth. I want things to happen as I trigger them. I don't want a "Let me think about that, OK, I'm in" response.
For it's intended purpose, the 'Pan may even be faster than Macs. That makes for a great, seamless user experience that lasts for hours. If you're going to pay for a device with media capability, you should be able to use it as fast or faster than you can navigate a newspaper. Kindle will have to figure that out.
