PeterB- I can help with the lapel pins. 
Minimum is usually 100, but some places will do as little as 50. I rep a pin line so the info below is based on the company I work with.
If you go with a die struck brass, a 1"x1" will run you about $4-5 each. This includes a custom shape and up to 6 colors. No set ups or die charges.
I have done pin programs similar to this for other schools (High Schools and Colleges) and they go very well. If it becomes an ongoing program, the students coming up through the group look forward to "earning" their pins.
