First, ensure that the headphone jack is unobstructed, i.e. nothing is stuck inside the jack.
Next, launch Audio MIDI Setup in your Utilities folder in your Applications folder. Set audio input and output to 44100.0 kHz and 2-ch 16-bit using Core Audio or Built-in Audio.
If you still have no sound output, you can eliminate hardware as the source of the problem by logging into another account and trying sound there.
