Because most of us slept in these selfsame cribs, or even more poorly constructed devices. And the 'what worked for me should work for my kids' is the most common parental thought process for parents.
Except for those damn cloth diapers. I'm VERY grateful for disposable diapers. I spent too much of my pre-teen and teen years changing cloth diapers on my baby sisters. Eww.....
I agree with both points. Though, some of the well made older cribs are every bit as safe as ones made to the current specs. But the market was flooded with lots of cheaply made cribs using poor quality components over the last few decades. And many parents did not know how to tell the difference, and it was not always determinable by price either.
