"Right around the corner" is a bit of a stretch for anyone not familiar with the area.
To get to Dreamland from Vulcan Park, you'd take Richard Arrington Blvd North, bear left at the "Y" onto 20th St., turn left at 14th Ave S, and Dreamland is 5 1/2 blocks West on the left on 14th Ave S, located in a tiny block of stores in the middle of a residential neighborhood.
Dreamland is more famous and draws more tourists, but Rib-It-Up at 830 1st Ave N has superior food.

Big checkmark on the Botanical Gardens for most of the year, but this summer it's been stupendously hot and humid even by local standards. Definitely not for anyone unused to our weather at the moment.

There is also the Birmingham Museum of Art and the Southern Museum of Flight.
