I agree. Unless money is REALLY tight just find a hotel with valet parking included. Dragging luggage onto public transportation is ill advised. Dropping off your family at the hotel then driving out of the city to park, then taking public transportation back into the city is a pretty crazy stunt to save a bit of money.

I've driven into the city with luggage, stayed at a friend's pad on the UES and put the car into a garage across the street for about $32/day (this was about six years ago). You have to pay the parking fee as the cost of "visiting" NYC, no way around it, like the $7 tolls.
