Whenever I go to the city and need to bring the car, I usually park on the west side, around the 10th Avenue, 15-20th Streets. There are a number of car parks in that area that offer reasonable rates. I'll leave the car there for a day or four.

I can park for free in New Jersey (at a friends house), but I find that to be more hassle than it's worth. Park the car, then get a lift to the NJ Transit, take the train - it's a bit of a pain, especially if I'm purchasing stuff in the city.
