If you walk or hit him it's like an automatic double, he'll be on second by the third pitch. Too bad he can't actually hit.

Have him go to the batting cages regularly. Start off with a pitch speed that he can hit decently until he hits almost every pitch that's decent. Then move up to the next speed. I know a guy that did this with his grandson when he was 8 (started off as a fun grandfather/grandson activity and the kid loved doing it). By the time the kid turned 10, he was hitting better than most of the 12 year olds on his team.
