Wait, I just had a wild thought -- aren't the hard drives in the new iMac shipped with an altered connector and special Apple firmware? What if this restore partition is going to be a part of Apple firmware (like those Western Digital passport drives) and Apple's vision is that since you have to buy a replacement hard drive from them (not for the legacy Macs, all the new ones we buy in the next 3 years), they'll have the restore partition already on them, ergo no issue with hard drive replacement and no boot disk. (The older Macs can boot/install off cd that came with their computer and then upgrade).
