Anyone have any experience or knowledge of Spinal Cord Stimulators?

A cow-orker blew out a disc moving heavy drums without the right posture. He got a lifetime disability as a result. He had one installed after enduring the pain for a couple of months. It completely eliminated his pain but occasionally had to be cranked up enough that he could feel it buzzing. I have not heard from him in 10 years so I do not know what the long term situation is.
