Rather than a third party i see a greater chance of fractionalization. Maybe 5-10 small parties able to gather steam in Congress. There are a large number not happy with either political party that could begin aligning themselves into single issue parties unwilling to compromise at all - groups like hard-core pro-life, socialist, isolationist, etc..
third parties are pink unicorns. every time a third party is mentioned, there are starry visions of the perfect candidate, who is an archetype of virtue (at least the virtues of the dreamer) and possesses no human fault.
