It must be incredibly hard to be reminded of that every day but as we move from living memory to a historical memory, it is also important to not forget one of the darkest times in human history.
Specific events may fade into historical memory, but we shouldn't kid ourselves that nothing like that will happen again. Genocide has certainly recurred since then, and it will continue to recur unless we suddenly become much, much better creatures than we currently are.
Intervention in genocide is extremely rare, and groups engaged in it (and those who might be in some way obligated to intervene) resist the application of the term "genocide" to their actions. The Turks still refuse to admit that they carried out a campaign of genocide in Armenia.
