I'm surprised you still have to wear ties and button down shirts. It has been years since I have had to do that for an IT job. Polo shirts and khakis is the norm around here.
My company is a full-featured consulting firm. I can go from swapping drives in a hot server room to setting up a new server in a residential basement to setting up a backup drive for an executive in a penthouse suite to a sales meeting with a new client to troubleshooting Adobe apps and desktop RAIDs for a bunch of designers all in the same day.
I take off the tie when I know I'll be parked someplace hot or doing a lot of heavy lifting, but otherwise, the tie stays on during work hours just in case I have to meet with a high-muck-a-muck.
We have dress shirts with logos over the breast pocket and we have logo-jackets, but they're optional.
