Respectfully, GGD, I followed your links, and I don't see any way that drive could be under an OWC warranty regardless of what sort of package it may have been purchased with.
As pointed out on the previous thread, the hours on it indicate it's been running at least 2.25 years.
I suppose it's possible OWC offered a 3-year "solutions warranty" for some period of time about 2 years ago, but not likely.
Does OWC honor 'factory warranties', or would he have to go to Seagate?
/Mr Lynn
It would be beyond unreasonable to expect a retailer to bear any responsibility for a drive which is failing after years of use.

It may all depend on how that drive was sold by OWC, if it was sold in Seagate Retail packaging, then you deal with Seagate for the warranty. But if OWC purchased them as bulk OEM drives that they also sold installed in their enclosures, then the warranty agreement may be between Seagate and OWC and the customer would need to go through OWC with whatever warranty terms OWC provided.

Look at this drive update kit http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Seagate/Y3ST9750420/
It's unclear from the description if the hard drive included is an OEM drive or comes in retail packaging.

Replace the HD. Restore from the Time Machine backup.
Deal with the warranty later.
