There is a company called Genspera that has a cancer drug in trials that I'm really interested in. It binds a vicious poison to a compound that won't let go of the poison unless it bumps into a specific type of tumor cell. Like pulling a pin on a hand grenade it only releases the poison at the location of the cancer. The drug may circulate harmlessly until it encounters it's target. Once released the poison promptly kills he cancer. Side affects so far have been nausea, fatigue and fever.
There's another treatment for leukemia that involves bone marrow transplants using white blood cells infected with modified HIV. A coworker's daughter in law was the first west coast trial. She had no detectable trace of cancer after 2-4 days. There's actually an XKCD comic about the treatment.
