I've helped install cheaper two-piece toilets.
They were even more difficult to get the tank properly aligned.
And even when we got it on there as good as we could the owner still had to wedge a piece of wood between the tank & the wall to stop the tank from shifting every time someone used it.
Again, going forward I'd pick a one-piece toilet (Toto or other) over two-piece for DIY.
Of course, nothing beats the aggravation of the 'wall-mount' toilets originally installed in our extended family's mountain cabin (now all replaced with standard floor-mount).
Why?
We had an old 1960 bathroom gutted and remodeled last winter, and got a smallish Kohler 1.6 gal. toilet from HD. Aside from its cheap plastic seat, and the somewhat inadequate level in the bowl, it works well enough; no clogs so far, even when the grandkids were here using large quantities of TP.
It's a toilet, not a design statement. What are you getting for four times the cost?
