With my Brother lasers with tape over the sensor holes, I do it the old fashion way, like my early LaserWriter that didn't have any toner sensor. You just wait until the print quality degrades, and shaking doesn't make it any better.
You could go by page counts also for a rough estimate of when it's getting to be time to buy the replacement to have on hand.
