How's your laptop's WiFi reception near the iMac?

Got an alternate boot drive to start up from? (Not a clone as that would inherit the problems from the old system.) Maybe start your laptop (MacBook Pro?) in target mode and see if you can boot the iMac from it, just to see whether WiFi networks start showing up in the Airport menu under the other OS.
mbp has no trouble picking up wifi reception.
neither do any of the other three machines in the household.
as for target mode on the mbp and re-booting on the imac, i don't know how to do that.
let me read up and see if that is an option.
one of the reasons i was hoping to update the 10.6.8 os on the imac to yosemite was to re-set the airport.
