ethernet works in the imac's present location (though my ever loving and patient wife is not thrilled with wire from router to imac) but i would like to eventually move the imac to a different workspace and without the airport working, i would have to string a 30' ethernet cable thru the apartment and that is not a viable option.
Well, since you're in an apartment, I won't even suggest moving the router with your iMac. But if you find that either the Airport card or the antenna in the iMac is kaput, it will be cheaper to buy a USB wireless adapter from our hosts than to have the Apple Store take the iMac apart:

unfortunately, i had previously attempted a usb wireless adapter.
i found the set-up windows-like and clunky.
the bigger issue was the software was ridiculous in that when the imac would sleep, the re-connect was never automatic and needed a sign-in protocal each and every time. if the software could have "learned" that the imac would see the same wireless router, perhaps that would have been a viable alternative.
if anyone knows 1st hnd of a wireless adapter with thoughtful software that doesn't need a sign in each and every time, i would certainly look at this route again.
