No, a few people suggested it to me and mentioned they had done it before. In this case, the oil filter is on the top of the engine. I was more concerned about dust falling in from the shop vac. So I hooked a clean funnel up to the end of the hose, and taped it on. That way dirt should fall from the hose around the funnel and be trapped. I lost a little bit a oil, maybe 200ml or so.
