Latest AppleTV and Old receiver--HDMI
#7
You have to use HDMI into the TV. From the TV you can use analog audio to the receiver (if your tv has analog outputs) or use the optical output combined with an inexpensive DAC to provide the analog output. I use the FiiO D07 which is very affordable and works well. It is possible your older Yamaha receiver has an optical port on the back depending on it's age. If so you can skip the DAC.

You can buy a device that splits the HDMI into HDMI and optical audio but I've read mixed things about that. If you try it please report back what your experience is.
