It's just a matter of preference. Ours is a counter height island that seats six. The advantage if it's in the middle of the kitchen is is that it's an additional work surface. It's also a great serving area for a party whether people are sitting around it or not.
It's not for everyone, but we find it comfortable and practical. My kids grew up with this since they were toddlers and never had a problem with it. Counter-height chairs or stools have rungs that you rest your feet on.
It wouldn't work to push tables together, so if that's important, you may want to pass. We have a separate dining room table we use when we have a more formal dinner, but that's less than a dozen times a year.
