Here's a few things I've learned.
Have the tools necessary at hand. Stud finder, level, hand or power tools, and Mongo. My Mongo (Shane) is 6'3" 275lbs Irish with red hair and full beard.
You can locate where you want the TV now by taking the width on your tape measure and use the tape (see below) to locate.
After you locate the studs which are 16" on center some of the time,use "blue tape" to mark the locations. You want the center not the edge. Now locate the studs farther out left and right to boost your confidence.
Monoprice instructions are pretty good. I notice the selection is not the same since the change of ownership.
