Cats vomit under stress. (So do babies, for that matter.) I imagine the kitties were riding inside some kind of carrier contraptions, which would have served to contain any disagreeable fluids, facilitating clean-up as well.
As a traveling companion, I have encountered all sorts of unexpected twists and turns. It is part of the adventure and part of the cost of a free trip. I would certainly bug out if I found myself riding with Bonnie and Clyde, but a nervous kitty is just ordinary life.
Note that cat-puke is considerably smaller in volume than what you see from humans, and much easier to clean up. Given the detailed nature of his advanced planning, I imagine that mattkime was well prepared for this possibility.
