I personally think Mazda makes better driver cars - I'd look at Mazda 3 and/or Miata for Japanese, a used 3 series BMW - e46 or e90 - or VW GTI for German, etc.
If you like Hondas, then go that way. They are reliable.
Mazda was going to be my suggestion, too -- and they are just as reliable as Honda.
