In the early seventies my older brother shipped home (from Vietnam) an Akai reel-to-reel tape recorder that could play and record cassette eight-track tapes, as well. Don't remember which brand of receiver, turntable, and speakers, but they matched the tape recorder and impressed a high-school kid (me).
An extension to this system was the cassette player I installed in a '65 VW bus. The bus ran on six volts, so I kept a twelve-volt battery under the seat. (Had to charge it regularly.) Driving around while listening to self-made tapes was great.
