So, is "Linens not available" a new hotel thing? Or am I just shopping the low end hotels?

Not sure where you're headed in Thailand, but I've been pleased with the Nanta chain for budget lodgings. Mom-and Pop Thai places often have "mattresses" that are really hard (by Western standards). In Bangkok, I like the Nanta Silom.

I've been thinking about returning to Bangkok. Spent a week there in 2016, but it was during Songkran, and a lot of stuff was closed for three days, so I feel like I have unfinished business there. I'd love to get up around Chiang Mai as well. Right now, it's "anyplace that's once-in-a-lifetime-cheap" is my goal. Wasn't really planning on traveling for the rest of the year, but if any of my desired destinations are super-cheap... I'd just go for it.
