I'm gonna go with Vision63 on this one, at least in as much as it depends what you were raised on. I had only ever had Aunt Jemima and Mrs. Butterworth's (exact same fake product from two different manufacturers) until I was in my late 20s when a friend got some genuine Vermont Maple Syrup and offered to make pancakes for brunch. When I tried it, I found the real stuff to be WAY too sweet, too thin, and to have much too strong a maple flavor for my liking. Had I grown up eating the real thing I'd no doubt find the fake stuff to be but a pale and imperfect reflection of the genuine article, but since the less intense and thicker fake stuff is what I'm used to it is what I prefer.
