Something was wrong with it if it was "thin." I have the feeling that you had "maple flavored syrup" instead of maple syrup.
The real stuff comes in different grades, with varying weight, color and flavor-profiles. (Personally, I like a dark amber "smoky" maple syrup.) If you're in the North East, I suggest that you look for some when the unspoken thing is over and you can visit a state fair. The producers can explain the differences and you might just find one or two types that are palatable.
