It is also worth noting that the Ukraine situation is very much similar to Taiwan. Who would actually come to the defense of the island if China moved to reclaim it? Economically crippling Russia is a far cry different than doing the same to China.
This is along my line of thinking as well. This is a test, and if Putin can get away with this, what is next. Now, I also believe that no country will come to the direct aid oof Ukraine unless nukes are used. Which is why he will not use them, just threaten.
This it's also a test run for the Taiwan situation, although I don't think China will engage that for a while, to see how this works out for Russia, and because they have so much more to lose.
