I lucked out in that the company bought me a Fujitsu ScanSnap (S1500M) a goodly number of years ago. It's an absolute champ, especially since they updated the software (there was a while when they seemed to EOL the software updates, and I was using a third-party app -- which still worked but wasn't as clean as the Fujitsu one).
Recently I got an Epson ET-5880 EcoTank AIO, which has duplex scanning, and figured I'd do away with the ScanSnap; the Epson does a good job but just isn't as quick and doesn't have the bits & bobs I've gotten used to with the ScanSnap.
FWIW, there's scores of them on eBay. I had a used one a long, long time back; only downside was that the rollers were very worn and it had trouble with big stacks of paper. Was happy when I got the replacement.
Just took a look at eBay, there's one with under 30 minutes left with the bid at $15. Seriously.
