I know of some families that have decided not to buy a Tesla based on Musk's antics of the past year. One opted for the Mustang electric and the other will not but the fugly Cyberturck. Elon Musk is the most known CEO in the auto world let alone the business world. He is definitely generating headlines that may affect willingness to buy a Tesla. I would guess that most people don't know the name of any other auto CEO.
Musk is now trying to court a different spectrum of buyers who are less likely to buy Teslas. Read any political forum of a certain slant and you will see that electric cars are some kind of conspiracy. I have had a person in my real life warn me against buying an electric vehicle because of baseless conspiracies. To paraphrase, "The electric cars can be controlled by someone else because they have so many electronics in them!" These people are not aware that ICE cars of the last 20 years have a bunch of electronics in them as well.
