I just have to interject specifically that touch screen controls which require looking at and touching an 2D image based control (as opposed to a physical button than can be activated by position and feel alone) have been scientifically proven to diminish operators' focus on other tasks.

It's cheaper to manufacture touchscreens and also more flexible for the manufacturer to release software updates down the lines and change the look and functionality of touchscreens. BUT, all of this at the cost of usability (not having to look at controls) for the driver, as you note.

I assume that touch panels will continue to be used in cars going forward, but I would love to see more things going back to physical buttons.
