My family (and our friends) have very disparate political opinions--from far left all the way to far right and everywhere in between. We decided, years ago, that our relationships were worth far more than whatever idiot (from anybody's individual perspective) was in office, locally or nationally. So, politics don't come up for more than a sentence or two and overwhelmingly people don't respond to a comment, letting it just die. People of like political persuasions do have side conversations about various issues when others are there, but don't try to bait the other side. There was one uncle who was an exception-he was far left and spent a lot of time trying to tell others just how they should think and that they were idiots if they didn't vote his way. He was generally ignored by everybody when he did this and so it never really caused much of a problem, although the righties among our family really didn't much like him and when he died, a general, "Oh, well" (well, maybe, "Good!") was the response of the righties.
One exception among our friends (family all lives far away) seems to be our US Representative, Marjorie Taylor Greene. Our friends, from far left to far right, all think she is a complete moron. But, given that we all think she's an idiot, there's not a lot to talk about other than hoping that Shawn Harris (who is impressive as hell) would beat her. Or that she'll go into the Trump administration just to get her out of NW Georgia. We can still hope for that...
